Normandale Graduate Story - Kylie Borchardt

When Kylie Borchardt came to Normandale Community College she knew she loved learning, enjoyed music, and wanted to pursue a degree. She started out focusing on studying biology, but the moment she took a Music Theory class her entire outlook changed.

Kylie mentions that it all started with a great advisor who knew she loved music and suggested taking Music Theory as an elective. “Once I took that class with Rob Groneman, I fell in love with the Normandale Music Program and was invited to do performances and so many other things. Now I am a full-on music major and building my career in what I love to do.”

Kylie will graduate this spring, and is transferring to University of Colorado-Colorado Springs where she is hoping to study to become a choral music director, and continue to expand her range of getting involved with band and orchestral programs. She is excited for the next step in her education, and thankful to all of the great Normandale music instructors for helping her realize music could be a career.

“I was always passionate about music, but I never really thought about it as a possible career. This place made me realize that there is a huge opportunity for me to pursue my passion. I figured that out at Normandale.”

Kylie performed as part of the Vocal Ensemble in the final Music Department concert of the year on May 9. She talked before the concert describing it as a great display of the amazing collaboration the group has done through the academic year.

“We have one really exciting jazz song that I am looking forward to performing with interesting harmonies that really demonstrates our group’s unique vocal blend. We also have a pop song by Billie Eilish, a renaissance piece about a sparrow and its owner, and a lot of acapella pieces with a few accompanied pieces. As a group, we have really grown together this year, and the tone melds into a beautiful thing that we are presenting.”
